Akureyri in Iceland
One of the first things that you should do if you plan on visiting Akureyri in Iceland, especially if you have children, is to visit the famous Santa’s House. Painted a vivid red, with candy on the roof and snowmen outside, it is very hard to miss. Inside the house are wonderful smells of smoked lamb cooking, a roaring fire, and of course, Santa himself, who is actually the owner of the house, dressed up to look like the man himself. Santa’s House is open all year round, and all sorts of Christmas-related goodies can be purchased here.
Apart from Santa’s House though, Akureyri, the largest town in Iceland, has much more to offer visitors to her shores. The scenery in the town and surrounding areas is spectacular of course, but there are other reasons too, why so many people from all over the world choose to visit Akureyri.
For instance, there is accommodation in Akureyri to suit all tastes and budgets, such as hostels, backpackers, campsites, guesthouses, holiday farms, and hotels as well, ranging from cheap to luxurious, where your every whim is catered for.
With the abundance of indoor and outdoor activities that the town of Akureyri has to offer, you are guaranteed to never be bored during your stay. You can stroll around the museums, spend an evening at the theater, watch a movie, or visit any one of the number of sights in and around the town. Another must-see in Akureyri, is the local arts festival, that is held every year, from June to August.
If you feel like doing something more adventurous, then there are outdoor activities such as hiking, skiing, snowboarding, angling, and horse riding to choose from, to name but a few. If you feel like seeing more of the town from a different angle, then you can take a ferry trip up the fiord, or one of several horse tours that the town has available.
Shopping opportunities are also plentiful in Akureyri. There are a number of supermarkets, stores selling the most beautiful locally-made knitwear, all sorts of arts and crafts, books, and of course, souvenirs that you can purchase to take home to that special someone.
Eating out is an absolute pleasure in Akureyri. There is a wide range of restaurants and eateries to choose from, where you can enjoy the local cuisine, as well as meals from various countries all over the world. Just a few of the foods available in Akureyri are mouth-watering seafood, lamb, steaks, soups, pizza, and of course, hamburgers.
There is no shortage of night time entertainment in Akureyri either. There are plenty of pubs and clubs to go to, if you feel like a night out on the town. Many of them offer live music for you to dance the night away, while other are perfect places to relax and chat over a drink or two. If you happen to overindulge, then you can pop into the only store that stays open all night, and grab a hamburger to eat in the cab on the way back to your hotel.
With everything that Akureyri has to offer, it is no wonder that it has become such a popular holiday destination for so many people from all corners of the world.
